There are a lot of things that happen to video editors who don’t admit them as often as they should. After you have spent time editing your project, moved all the text in your edit to the exact position that you want it, exported your video, and then watched the call-to-action (CTA) hide behind the comment icon when you upload it for people to see. No one informed you that the right side of TikTok is dead space. It was always going to be so because the platforms’ user interfaces will always go over the top of your videos. When you create a short-form video there is a horizontal bar at the bottom of the video with the following elements: profile icon; caption bar; “like” button; audio attribution; subscribe prompt. The “safe zone,” or non-dead space, is the middle section of the frame, which will never have these items layered above it. Your text, logo, and CTA will always be completely visible within this area.

By the end of 2026, being able to use the safe zone correctly will no longer be optional. All of the major social media platforms made significant updates to their user interface (UI) in 2025 and into 2026. Each update reduced the size of the “safe area” while rendering previous template designs/created guides irrelevant. In this article we will provide an overview of what the safe zones currently appear to be for each platform, along with information about how to view your video’s safe zone before you post it online.

Understanding how vertical video safe zones will affect the way your content is distributed is important. To ensure that all of your key visuals are viewable at all times, you should look into how using various layouts changes where the image is positioned on screen (i.e., toward or away from the edge).

Aspect Ratios and Vertical Videos

A “safe zone” refers to the part of your video’s screen which will always show up no matter what device you view it on, or how much UI the platform overlays. If you place something in a spot outside of this zone, there is risk that it will be blocked, cut off or overlaid by some element of the platform’s user interface.

Each vertical platform has its own 1080 x 1920-pixel display canvas (a 9:16 aspect ratio), but each one has less of a visible area within that same size. Each app overlays its own UI over the video, and each overlay is going to look different based upon whether or not someone is viewing an ad versus regular content; and if someone is using either iOS or Android.

Kreatli’s safe zone guide states that safe zones are just buffer areas within your canvas where things such as text overlays, logos and calls-to-action can be safely placed because they are sure to never get covered up, regardless of device type variations or UI overlays. Apps have many elements which they place over videos including playback controls, profile information, comments, captioning, etc. If you place anything too close to the edge of your canvas there is a good chance that it will be completely hidden, chopped-off, or even mistakenly touched by the viewer when attempting to use a feature of the app.

Why Safe Zones Matter Across Social Media Platforms More in 2026?

No platform leaves their UI alone. Platforms continuously change their UI as they release new features, move around the various ways users engage with the content and try out new formats. During 2025 and continuing into 2026, nearly all of the major short-form platforms updated their UI in a way that resulted in a reduction in the amount of usable safe space:

  • TikTok (Jan 2026) added an “Add to Playlist” button to the bottom right corner of the app, resulting in a right-side dead zone that increased by about 20 pixels. Source: PostPlanify
  • Instagram Reels (late 2025) enlarged the audio attribution bar at the bottom and thus increased the dead-zone space available at the bottom by approximately 50 pixels.
  • YouTube Shorts (late 2025) increased the size of the “subscribe” button by 30%, enlarging the bottom-left dead zone considerably.

Platforms continually update their user interface(s) three to five times annually. Therefore, a template or guide from six months prior could very well already be outdated. In addition, since 2026, AI-generated captions are now turned on by default on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, creating another moving component above your video content that did not exist previously.

In aggregate, your frame continues to shrink. Every time a platform releases a new feature, it usually ends up directly adjacent to the edges of your video, and those are also exactly where most people put their text overlays, logo images and CTA links.

Safe Zone Specifications and Safe Zone Margins for Top Networks

These vertical video safe zones are defined by their respective updated 2026 specifications for the top three platforms that currently support vertical video. All of these specifications begin as a 1080 x 1920 pixel canvas.

TikTok

TikTok’s text-safe area will be roughly 1080 x 1420 pixels (accounting for a small portion of the right-hand side where the user can view or tap “likes,” “comment,” “share,” etc., and the lower portion where the user’s “username” and “audio attribution,” plus the “caption” appear).

  • Top Margin: leave at least 130-250 pixels of space above the TikTok brand header area.
  • Bottom Margin: leave at least 250-320 pixels of space below the caption, username, audio attribution.
  • Right Margin: leave at least 120 pixels of space to the right of your content (the like, comment, share, bookmark buttons have been replaced with a playlist button).
  • Left Margin: leave at least 60-90 pixels of space to the left of your content.
  • Text Safe Area: approximately 840 x 1280 pixels, centered.

Instagram Reels

The Instagram Reels’ bottom UI is more aggressive than TikTok’s due to an addition to the audio attribution that occurred in 2025.

  • Safe Area: 996 x 1400 pixels. Centered within the frame.
  • Bottom Margin: at least 320 pixels (bottom of screen with caption, username, audio attribution; recently expanded). Because Instagram Reels have an excessive amount of overlays (captions and UI) for the bottom 40% of a video; with that in mind, when creating videos on Instagram Reels; as a creator you will need to keep any graphic or call to action away from the edges of your frame.
  • Right Margin: at least 84 pixels (right-hand side engagement buttons).

When designing for Explore pages: design for the smallest possible dimensions, which would be 996 x 1400. This is because when viewing videos in the Explore section of the app, they crop different parts of the frame than those in your main feed.

YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts is similar to TikTok and Reels in terms of horizontal padding, however the vertical UI elements at both the top and bottom have grown since YouTube announced support for vertical Shorts in 2025.

  • Safe Area: approximately 984 x 1500 pixels.
  • Top Margin: at least 380 pixels (title and channel info).
  • Bottom Margin: at least 380 pixels (comments, likes, subscribe prompt; subscribe button is now 30% larger than it was in 2024).

The Universal Safe Zone

The universal safe zone

The universal safe zone refers to the area (900 x 1400 pixels) that will be completely visible when using your video on all three major social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube). This means you can upload one single version of your video without having to make adjustments specific to each social media platform. Allowing you to keep all of the text, images, logos, etc., within this area will ensure that it is never obscured by anything added by the social media platforms. In short, as long as your video is framed well, there will be less chance for your crop to be weird or hide important parts of the video.

The best way to ensure that you are safe on all the different platforms (that may have different user interfaces) and that your most important visual elements do not get cropped out in the middle of an Instagram Reel is to keep them inside the middle 70-80% of the screen.

It is an extremely cautious approach but is recommended as the default for any team working at scale with no ability to create platform-specific versions of their videos.

Understanding Dead Zones: Keeping Important Elements Covered and Safe

You now know what we call the areas within the frame that contain items like comments, likes, etc. These areas are referred to as dead zones because there are always issues when you place significant content in these locations. They include:

  • Top Edge: each social media platform places some form of logo (channel/username/etc.) near the top portion of the frame. When you put your company’s logo near the top of your video, it may be partially covered on certain types of mobile devices.
  • Bottom Edge: the most crowded dead zone on each platform. Captions, user names, audio attributions, prompts for interacting with content, etc. often appear along the bottom portion of the frame. Your video’s captions may also lose part of themselves if you put them too close to the bottom of the video (anything below 1600px).
  • Right Side: both Instagram and TikTok have vertical engagement columns running down the right-hand side of the screen. The like/comment/share/bookmark buttons all reside in these columns which start roughly from the middle of the screen and go downward.
  • Lower-Right Corner: no other location on any of the short-form platforms is as hazardous as this lower-right corner. It contains both the engagement buttons from the right column and the caption/audio information from the bottom row simultaneously.

Most importantly, you should try to keep all of your video elements above the horizontal line through the middle of the screen and within a 120-pixel buffer from either side edge so that you can avoid having your video content interfere with the platform’s own user interface.

How to Check Your Content Before Publishing

To best prevent safe zone violations, you should view your content with a platform-accurate UI overlay displayed prior to export, not post. There are two ways to accomplish this.

Using SafeZoneCheck

In-Editor Safe Zone Templates and Safe Zone Guides

Transparent PNG safe zone overlays can be imported as guide layers above footage in editors like Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, etc. Free safe zone templates are available in 1080 x 1920 resolution for each platform. Download the template in PNG format and import it as the top layer in your timeline. Then use the guide layer to align your text & graphics. Finally delete or hide the overlay once you’ve completed editing. To streamline this workflow, content creators can utilize platform-specific visual guides for editing. These asset overlays prevent placement mistakes before exporting the final project file.

The main advantage of using editor overlays versus checking on web-based tools is that they work real-time while placing elements, rather than having to export first. For editors building a series with recurring positions of text and logo placement, setting up the guide layer initially can save them hours of manual checks later on in production.

Designing Vertical Video Ads for Maximum Conversion Rates

While organic content and paid ads share the same aspect ratio (vertical), they do not have the same dimensions regarding safe zones. One of the most consistent errors made in creating vertical video ads for paid campaigns is treating both forms equally when designing and producing.

All paid placements add UI elements that are not present in organic content:

  • TikTok Ads: “Shop Now” or “Learn More” CTA button appears at bottom of frame taking approximately 370 pixels of space from bottom instead of organic 250-320 pixels.
  • Instagram Sponsored Reels: adds “Sponsored” label and “Learn More” button which reduces the safe zone by another 80 pixels compared to organic layout.
  • YouTube Shorts Ads: display a “Skip Ad” or “Visit Site” button at bottom of frame.

When creating paid campaigns, the practical rule is to design with the stricter dimensions specifically for paid campaigns from the start, as well as to avoid any adaptation of an organic asset afterward. Developing two versions, one version for organic and one version for paid, does not take much longer during production but will prevent the most common failure in paid vertical video advertising: a CTA button located at the bottom of frame being physically blocked by the platform’s own “Learn More” button on every impression.

Safe Zone Guidelines to Place Text and Logos Accurately

Safe zones need to be part of the production workflow. They can’t just be added at the end. These are some things that work for high-volume teams:

  • Add a safe zone guide at the beginning of each project instead of the end. Adding the correct overlay for the platform being used as a guide layer before any text or graphics have been added will eliminate having to move around elements later in the edit process.
  • Use the universal 900 x 1400 safe zone for multi-platform projects. When you’re using the same video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts and don’t plan to make any changes based on the platform, there are only two dimensions that will give you full viewability across all three, and those are the most conservative common dimensions.
  • Look for conflicts with automatic captions. Automatic captions are now enabled by default on all major platforms. In terms of where you design your manually created subtitles in relation to where the auto-caption will sit on a particular platform, this is important. Most platforms put their auto-captions at the bottom one-third of the frame – precisely where most people place their manually-designed subtitles. Put your manually-designed subtitles above the line where auto-captions sit, or use platform-specific tools to turn off auto-captions.
  • Before launching paid media, run everything through SafeZoneCheck. For organic content, an editor overlay usually suffices. For anything going into paid circulation however, the web-checker gives you a worst-case scenario UI overlay – including ad-specific items – that an in-editor template won’t display.
  • Create a different version of an ad than an organic piece. Even though an ad and organic version may look similar in the edit, due to losing 50-80 pixels to ad UI in the bottom safe zone area, it’s absolutely necessary to reposition the call-to-action (CTA).
  • Label checked files prior to sending out to clients. This helps confirm that the verification step has been performed and eliminates the possibility of checking the same file again once it’s gone out to a client – especially for agencies and editors who deliver to clients. (e.g., VIDEO_TITLE_SAFEZONECHECKED)

Creative Practices for Instagram Feed and Short Placements

These are the three items most frequently found in a dead zone, and how they got there:

Captions/subtitles. Typically located too far down. Virtually all video editing software places text at least 1/3rd from the bottom of the screen – which completely coincides with where usernames/audio credits/engagement buttons sit in almost every type of short-form content. Position captions/subtitles approximately in the center third of the frame or utilize native caption tools provided by each respective platform that will automatically position captions/subtitles above UI elements.

Logo. Brand logos that are placed in the bottom-right-hand corner in accordance with horizontal video standards are situated in the exact location that is most active and overpopulated dead zone for every type of short-form video. At the bottom-right-hand corner of virtually every type of short-form video – i.e. TikTok – is where both the user-engagement button column and caption rows meet. In vertical videos, logos should be positioned in either the top-center or top-left portion – preferably inside of the upper safe margin.

Call to action (CTA). CTAs typically get hidden behind other UI elements whether or not an item is produced organically or via paid content. Therefore, in order for CTAs to be effective on vertical video, they must be placed at the horizontal mid-point or higher so they do not interfere with the engagement button column on either side and provide adequate clearance underneath to allow readability even while other platform UI elements are displayed.

Since 85% of social media video viewed does not include sound, captions are no longer optional. Captions that are visible but obstructed by platform UI are essentially functionally equivalent to no captions at all.

What Are the Real Costs of Safe Zone Violations?

Safe zone problems do not generate errors. Your video will upload, play and be viewed. Where your problem exists is in viewership engagement rather than a reject email.

If 60 percent of users can’t see your call-to-action (CTA), then you’re not getting conversions on 60 percent of those impressions. If your logo is hidden behind all of the buttons your user has to engage with before they reach the top of your screen, that is brand waste on every single viewer who could have seen it if it was placed properly. And if your auto-captions overlap with your subtitles, no matter what the device or browser your viewer uses, neither caption will be readable to them until the captions are turned off or adjusted.

When vertical format videos get 90 percent better engagement than horizontal, this is due to correct formatting. That benefit is undermined silently by safe zone violations which make your otherwise great content difficult to consume and convert less effectively because you’ll never know specifically why your metrics aren’t where you expected.

How Safe Zones Relate to Editing

Compliance with safe zones is an editorial choice made during the editing process, not something that can be fixed after a video goes live. When you decide to post your video while it still contains some level of safe zone violation, there are only two possible ways to resolve the issue: either post a revised version of the same video (and lose all of the engagement that video generated); or put out a partially broken version of your video to a significant portion of your audience.

The impact of safe zones in short-form video production workflows is directly related to how well these videos are designed. Each time the UI is updated by a platform, it reduces the amount of viewable space available. Videos that were effective just months ago may now be damaged by changes that occurred last month.

In order to minimize potential damage from changes in UI by platforms, simply conduct a two-minute review of your video using tools such as SafeZoneCheck before posting; use a guide layer throughout your entire edit; and establish rules regarding placement of text, logos and CTAs in the frame. If you follow these steps consistently, the UI becomes irrelevant to your content.
