With the boom of creators making content about books, you can now get book recommendations to include in your growing TBR list on TikTok.

#BookTok, an acronym for “Book TikTok,” is a community of book lovers on the TikTok app. You can also join virtual book clubs focusing on topics or genres you are interested in.

To remain up to date with the reading community, follow these popular #BookTok accounts if you’re a publisher, book critic, or just a voracious reader. Amid the looming TikTok ban on January 19, 2025, we also included where you can find them outside of TikTok.

The Rise of BookTok

With 9.6 billion views and counting, #BookTok is a reading-focused section of TikTok that has been dubbed the last wholesome spot on the Internet. Users, primarily young women, post short videos here that are influenced by the novels, characters, themes, and genres they like.

BookTok influencers also participate in reading challenges and book hauls, following trends to gain views. They are avid readers who want to share their love of books with the world.

BookTok offers a fresh way to connect with and engage non-readers and foster a new generation of book enthusiasts. It’s easy for TikTok users to produce videos based on what they read, making the pages come to life and conveying the value of a book in ways that words cannot express.

Written reviews don’t convey the emotional response to a book that BookTokers do.

Some creators are also writers, but most are readers! They make amusing memes and interesting videos, reviewing and discussing the books they enjoy. Although BookTok writers represent a wide array of book genres, romantasy (romance and fantasy) and young adult novels receive particular attention.

Several authors on the site, such as Colleen Hoover and Chloe Gong, have connected with a vast audience and become New York Times bestsellers.

TikTok has single-handedly shot Colleen Hoover’s books, some of which have been out for 10 years, to the bestseller list. In 2022, 6 out of the 10 bestselling books that year were written by Colleen Hoover.

This rapid popularity can be attributed to the rise of BookTok and the community’s ability to improve book sales within the publishing industry.

BookTok has become the most potent word-of-mouth generator the book publishing business has ever seen, thanks in part to the excitement and the reaction to that enthusiasm.

Although some people argue that BookTok talks about the same books, creators also suggest books to read instead of the popular ones, increasing the discussion of books.
